“Leverage,” a concept that has resonated with humans for centuries, holds immense power and potential. It is the key to accomplishing more with less effort and obtaining what we desire in life. Although it may seem complex to grasp, leverage is an inexhaustible force that can operate effortlessly even when we aren’t actively exerting ourselves. It is a tool accessible to all, enabling us to reach our goals and lead the life we envision.

By harnessing various forms of leverage, such as audience leverage, digital leverage, systems leverage, labor leverage, network leverage, productization leverage, and financial leverage, we can amplify our resources and achieve extraordinary outcomes. Let us delve into these methods and uncover their transformative abilities.

Leverage, an ancient tool, has played a pivotal role throughout history. It holds the key to unlocking greater fulfillment in life. Yet, understanding leverage can be a challenge. Over the course of my journey, spanning nine years, I have collected the finest explanations to bring clarity. Once we grasp its essence, we can embrace its application.

Imagine a landscaper arriving at your doorstep with nothing but bare hands. Undoubtedly, they can perform some work. However, another landscaper equipped with a shovel and a wheelbarrow would prove to be a wiser choice. And if yet another arrived with power tools, their capabilities would be further enhanced. Picture a landscaper armed with manual tools, power tools, and a digger, leaving competitors in the dust. Nevertheless, the most formidable landscaper is the one armed with manual tools, power tools, a digger, a dedicated team, and advanced technology like phones, laptops, and laser measuring devices. These are all forms of leverage.

Conventional wisdom often leads us astray. The traditional 9–5 mindset tricks us into believing that the more effort we exert, the greater the rewards. However, brute force pales in comparison to the extraordinary power of leverage. Brute force is limited by our finite energy and time, whereas leverage knows no bounds. It operates tirelessly even when we do not. While effort produces results, leverage has the potential to exponentially magnify our efforts, yielding outsized outcomes. Leverage is about achieving more than what we invest. It is an unfair advantage that critics, oblivious to its true nature, dismiss as luck or privilege. In reality, it is a tool available to anyone willing to harness its potential. Leverage can compound our time, money, and energy, propelling us toward success.

Archimedes artfully grasped the fundamental concept of leverage when he expressed, “Grant me a location to perch and a bar of sufficient length, and I shall initiate motion in the entirety of our planet.”

Below, you shall discover the various manifestations of leverage and the methodologies through which we can exploit them to our benefit.

Audience leverage

A term you may have encountered before might evoke mixed emotions. “Build an audience. Start an email list. Embrace social media,” they say. It may sound like advice rooted in the hustle culture, reminiscent of individuals involved in pyramid schemes or Ponzi schemes like Bernie Madoff. However, it is time to open our minds. An online audience grants us distribution, allowing us to reach people. Once we have the ability to reach a sufficient number of individuals, we no longer need to rely on job applications, advertising, or seeking permission. It revolves around connecting with fellow humans, not fixating on follower counts, selfies, or superficial metrics such as “likes.” Build a distribution network, and then you can create anything your heart desires, as Jack Butcher wisely advises.

The method to utilize it: To effectively harness the power of audience leverage, it is crucial to find a topic that ignites your passion and has the potential to cultivate a thriving community. Immerse yourself in this chosen topic, committing dedicated time every day to broaden your understanding and expertise. Additionally, diligently document each step of your personal journey within this domain. By doing so, you not only deepen your knowledge but also create valuable content that can engage and captivate your audience. Remember, the key lies in continuous learning, active participation, and meticulous documentation.

Digital leverage

Digital leverage complements audience leverage seamlessly. Audience leverage involves capturing awareness, but first, you must establish your presence and showcase what you have to offer the world. Digital assets serve as tireless employees working round the clock, spreading your message and enabling new audiences to discover your work. Videos, emails, illustrations, short animations, essays, podcasts, tweets, sales pages — and the most remarkable of all — no-code software. Instead of engaging an expensive team of developers and squandering vast sums of money, you can leverage readily available no-code software. While it imposes certain limitations, these constraints foster creativity. Heightened creativity leads to greater leverage. Personally, I find Zapier, a no-code software, particularly valuable. It acts as the adhesive tape that seamlessly connects diverse software systems that would otherwise be incompatible.

The method to utilize it: When leveraging digital assets, it is crucial to avoid being overwhelmed. There is a temptation to be present on every platform simultaneously, which ultimately results in being nowhere at all. Avoid this pitfall. Select one platform and one content format (writing, audio, video, illustrations). Consistently publish content every day for at least a year. Observe as your leverage skyrockets.

Systems leverage

Systems leverage often ignites excitement among self-improvement enthusiasts, who may obsess over goals and habits. However, goals often fade into elusive dreams, while habits become mere desires we plan to pursue when time permits. Such an approach leads us down a path to nowhere. A system, on the other hand, is a habit bolstered by a repeatable framework. With a system in place, we no longer need to deliberate; we simply act. Automation is a natural consequence of implementing a system, and over time, this leads to remarkable leverage. The key distinction between a habit and a system lies in documentation. A system incorporates checklists and procedures that anyone can follow.

The method to utilize it: To harness systems leverage effectively, transform your passions into habits, and subsequently convert those habits into systems. Document every facet of the system, enabling future delegation of certain tasks. Outsourcing components of your system introduces yet another form of leverage: labor leverage.

Labor leverage

Labor leverage, a fancy way of expressing the concept “delegate work to others and liberate yourself to be creative,” is often associated with startups and entrepreneurship, a subject that business enthusiasts relish and tend to emphasize excessively. However, I advocate for an alternative form of leverage: freelancers. Freelancers possess the ability to tackle one-off tasks and step in to resolve urgent issues as needed. Once their services are no longer required, they return to their workstations, ceasing to charge for their time. In my online business, I currently rely on a virtual assistant and four to five specialized freelancers.

The method to utilize it: To leverage labor effectively, begin by developing systems that enable you to instruct freelancers on completing tasks on your behalf. Utilize tools like Notion and Loom (screen share software) to document your systems comprehensively. Start by hiring your first freelancer for a small, one-time task (limiting the cost to $100). Gradually grow comfortable with delegating work to others. The shift in mindset from “I must do everything myself” to “Others can assist with this” offers tremendous leverage.

Network leverage

Network leverage emphasizes the importance of the connections we cultivate. There is a widely recognized proverb that states, “The measure of your power is determined by the relationships you possess.” Drawing from my personal experiences, I concur with this assertion. Therefore, I am always proactive in expanding my network. It began with LinkedIn and then extended to Elon’s Birdy app. Building a valuable network does not entail sending cold direct messages to strangers. Instead, it revolves around contributing thought-provoking ideas to ongoing online conversations. Over time, people will remember you. Once you do make contact with them directly, they will promptly reply and acknowledge your identity.

The method to utilize it: To leverage the network effectively, leave five to ten meaningful comments each day on posts that resonate with you within your preferred domain. After several months, start reaching out to individuals you have engaged with. Initiate a connection by expressing appreciation for something they have done and inquire about their current projects. Find small ways to offer assistance or share advice based on your own experiences.

Productization leverage

Productization leverage centers around the notion that we all possess skills and knowledge. However, our default approach often involves trading our time for money, resulting in numerous one-on-one relationships rather than one-to-many interactions. One of my most transformative decisions was converting my knowledge and expertise into products, such as courses, digital downloads, templates, and eBooks. This transition liberated me from the need to be physically present to deliver value. Products enable you to scale your time and assist a broader audience simultaneously.

The method to utilize it: To leverage productization effectively, reflect on the skills and knowledge you possess that others might find valuable. Create a digital product around this expertise. Start small, perhaps with a straightforward eBook or template, and expand from there. Utilize audience leverage and digital leverage to promote your product.

Financial leverage

Financial leverage involves employing other people’s money to generate additional wealth. This concept is commonly associated with banks and investors but not limited to the affluent. Anyone can leverage financial resources to grow their wealth. The crucial thing is to guarantee that your wealth is actively generating income for you, instead of the opposite occurring.

The method to utilize it: Start a quest for knowledge to acquaint yourself with different investment opportunities, such as equities, fixed-income securities, properties, and additional choices. Commence by placing small amounts of money into affordable index funds or real estate crowdfunding platforms. As you enhance your understanding and confidence, gradually broaden your investments, potentially gaining greater profits.

In order to strengthen your abilities in achieving your aspirations, it is vital to comprehend the above seven different methods of leverage and how to utilize them efficiently. Leverage empowers you to achieve more with what you already possess. It is a potent instrument that can be accessed by anyone who seeks their coveted way of life. Commence by taking small steps and progressively enhancing your leverage as time goes by. By doing so, you can optimize your capabilities and achieve remarkable feats. Bear in mind that leverage is a catalyst for metamorphosis, empowering you to make the best use of your existing resources and forge a life filled with contentment and triumph. Start small and steadily expand your leverage over time.
